Llanddona to Moelfre (2019-09-09)

It rained all night and rain was forecast for the whole morning, so we were emotionally prepared for a wet day.  This morning we had to be a little better organized as our bags were being picked up, along with ourselves, as we set off for the fishing village of Moelfre. Gillian was right on time and dropped us back at the church in Llanddona, and we were on our way for the 16.5 km walk to Moelfre, complete with rain pants and coats.

Start Of Day 2

The trail started along a lane in along the beach, then continued through a marsh, before rising on to a sea wall for 800 metres.  The route today has several sections that are not crossable at high tide, but thankfully the tides were favourable and we did not require any detours.

Walking The Sea Wall

By the end of the sea wall, and with no rain having fallen, we removed the coats to avoid over-heating.  The path continued to follow fairly close to the shoreline, right around Red Wharf Bay, to the village of Red Wharf Bay.  We would have stopped here for an early lunch, but the pub was not yet open, so we continued on towards Benllech, walking higher up along the cliff tops.

Red Wharf Bay and Village

At this point it started to rain, but by the time we got our coats on and put the rain covers on our backpacks, the rain stopped and we did not see it again for the remainder of the day’s walk (how lucky was that?).

The Bay Cafe in Benllech is right on the trail, but as we cannot be lucky in everything, it is closed on Mondays.  The alternative was a walk up a very steep street to the middle of the village.  Here we had several choices and settled on Bradley’s Cafe.  Marlene wanted soup, but of course they were sold out of soup and so she opted for the vegan pate, which came as the vegan special, and took a long while to eat....much longer than my ham and cheese roll.

Back on the trail we negotiated several more cliffs and walked over the next headland to Little Beach.

Cliff Top Trail

After a short walk across the sandy beach, it was back up and over the next headland, before descending into Moelfre.  Our B&B is in a new estate on the North side of the village, but within easy walking distance of the pub, the only game in town for an evening meal.

Moelfre

Dinner at the Kinmel Arms was satisfying and certainly good sized portions, but the walk home after dinner was bitterly cold.  Some houses even had their fires burning.

And so another great day is done, and time to get some sleep.
