Burgos to Lugo (Thursday, October 2nd)

With time to kill this morning, Marlene and I followed El Camino de Santiago from the cathedral out of town.  We had only gone a few blocks when we came across a large grocery store - where was that when we needed it?  We continued along the river and back out to the university, before retracing our steps to our apartment.

We quickly packed our bags, cleaned up the apartment and headed off to meet Randy and Marty at 11:00 am to hand in our apartment keys.  Towing our bags behind us, we headed to Juarreno for one last coffee, then sat on a bench on the riverside pathway, ate lunch, and watched the people, until it was time to head to the train station.

The train was 20 minutes late arriving, but by 3:45 pm we were leaving Burgos and heading to Lugo in Galicia.  We met a young university student on the platform, and he too was heading to Lugo, so he promised to keep us informed if he learned anything about our connection in Monforte de Lemos, as it seemed likely that we would miss our connection.

The countryside changed from desert-like to treed and hilly, and we passed high above several deep valleys, before it got dark and we were unable to see anything outside the windows.

Our young friend was good to his word, and came to tell us that the train would be waiting at Monforte de Lemos, and sure enough it was on the adjacent platform when we arrived.  A quick transfer and we were on our way go Lugo.

We arrived in Lugo at 10:00 pm, had no trouble finding our way to Hotel Espana, following the Google map directions that we had brought with us.

Lugo was originally settled by the Romans, in the first century BC, who a few centuries later built a wall around the city for fortification, and the wall is still intact, almost two thousand years later.  Our hotel is directly opposite the wall, and our window is a little below the top of the wall, meaning that people walking the wall can peer into our windows.  Perhaps we should close the shutters before going to bed?
