Lugo day 1 (Friday, October 3rd)

Being in Galicia, the language is a little different than in Burgos, but we still manage to make ourselves understood with our limited Spanish.

We were out at 8:00 am and headed off in the dark and fog into the walled town, looking for coffee.  We found Canela Bakery on Praza Maior, and managed to order two coffees, two teas and two toasts.

After breakfast we walked around the top of the wall (a 45 minute walk), and got ourselves oriented to the layout of the town.

Tomorrow is the first day of the 8-day festIval of San Froilan, patron saint of Burgos, and there was a lot of preparation work going on - blocking streets, erecting stages, etc.  In the afternoon we walked through an amusement park that had been set up on a street and in a park, outside the wall.  There were lots of rides and games similar to what you would see at any fair in Canada, but we most enjoyed "Buffalito", a bull-riding ride for young children.  I can send a video if you are interested.

On all our overseas trips we seem to run into someone we know, and on this trip it happened today.  In the amusement park we found one of Marlene's yoga buddies, Margot, and her husband Rob, who are walking the Camino de Santiago.  They have been walking for 35 days and have 5-7 days remaining to reach Santiago de Compostella.  Quite the trek, and not my idea of a good time.  Margot and Rob were enjoying the local delicacy, Pulpo (boiled octopus), something which we will have to try in the coming days.

In the evening we wandered the walled-town and watched the opening ceremonies of San Froilan 2014.
